Acrobatics is a performance art that showcases exceptional balance, agility, and motor coordination. Although acrobatic gymnastics is a sport itself, the fundamentals of acrobatics are also found in other sports (such as ballet, diving, and martial arts).
Although many ancient cultures had acrobatic traditions, the earliest known depiction of the art is found in Minoan art from approximately 2000 B.C. Ancient Greeks and Romans practiced the art, as well as the Europeans of the Middle Ages and the people of the Western Han Dynasty in China. Even today, acrobatics is commonly found in popular Chinese variety art.
