This Man Plays ‘La Campanella’ Using Just Glasses Of Water

This performance (along with this one) proves that instruments don’t have to look a certain way to make beautiful music. The unique contraption, first created in 1741, is known by a variety of names, including, but not limited to, the glass harp, musical glasses, angelic organ, verrilion and ghost fiddle.

Their origin is said to have been due to desperate circumstances; when bailiffs came to arrest creator Richard Pockrich, he entranced them by playing his glasses. According to legend, a pardon immediately followed. After his escape from the law, Pockrich continued to produce inventions which were alternately genius and wacky. From 1756 until his death in 1759, he toured England, performing with his musical glasses.
