Every day in the news, we’re bombarded with stories about racial issues, and most of them seem to center around divisive attitudes and anger, on both sides of the divide. So when an African-American man and his friend posted a photo to social media with a 93-year-old frail white woman between them, telling how they had cut her lawn for free, it touched millions of battle-weary hearts.
It was just last spring that Rodney Smith Jr. posted the photo, and the woman just happens to be his own neighbor! Amazingly, she had been trying to mow he
Posting the photo of the three neighbors, Smith added the caption:
“We did this sweet lady’s lawn today. She is 93, the neighbors told us that she been out there trying to cut her own lawn. Have no fear, raising men lawn care is going to make sure her lawn is done every two weeks! Making a difference in our community!”
Raising Men Lawn Care was Smith’s own fantastic brain-child. Its goal is simple: to do lawn care for those who do not “have the time, resources and/or money to manicure their yards,” and to do so free of charge, to boot.
Although the grassroots organization is still small, with only 20 regular volunteers, in less than a year since its inception, the men in the group have taken care of more than 300 lawns, free of charge.
“I want to show our children (our future) that by helping others they too will receive a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem, moral value, and purpose in themselves,” says Smith.
And indeed he has, while also showing that “loving thy neighbor as thyself” is more than just an old Biblical platitude, but words to truly live by.
We salute this amazing group of citizen pioneers, who are bringing America back together one lawn and one neighbor at a time.
