Down syndrome occurs when there is an extra copy of chromosome 21. It’s the most common chromosomal condition, with an occurrence rate of one in every 691 babies born in the United States. Down syndrome is not hereditary (except in a mere 1% of cases) and occurs across all racial and socioeconomic strata.
Heart defects, respiratory issues and hearing loss are among the common problems faced by those with Down syndrome, as well as cognitive delays. However, with medical, social and educational advances, people with Down syndrome are living longer, healthier and happier lives.
