In Matt Harding’s travels around the world, he noticed that dancing is everywhere. Though we often focus on our differences, dancing is something that all humans have done for thousands of years.
The history of dance is difficult to pin down because it leaves behind no physical record. Cave paintings of dancing figures, however, have been dated as far back as the Mesolithic era.
Dance has long been used as a means of expression. Choreographed dances were originally utilized in aid of storytelling. Before writing was developed, dance was an important way to pass down history, alongside oral traditions. Dance also has a historical role in healing. Early dancing is thought to have been the foundation for rituals using ecstatic trances.
