When Issa Khadem was trimming hair in his barber shop, he noticed the thermometer and it was reaching record temperatures. That is also when he noticed a little boy in the back of a car crying and he sprang into action.
“As soon as we saw him, we were like, ‘Oh my god, do we break the window, are we allowed to do that?’ So we just rang the police straight away,” Issa Khadem said. The barber quickly phoned 911 while the dangerous situation that was unfolding right before his eyes. The police came and smashed the window so that they could gain access to the child, who was treated for dehydration. They found the boy’s father drinking at the local pub. He is now behind bars for the terrible decision he made.
The father has been charged with leaving a child in a motor vehicle causing distress, neglecting a child in his care and resisting arrest. There was more to the story. When the mother of the child came to pick the small boy up, it was discovered the man had left his second son, a two-year-old, at home alone.
The temperatures had reached 104 degrees Fahrenheit on that particular day. Those temperatures are extremely dangerous for anyone who is left exposed to the high heat for a long time. Without the brave actions of Issa Khadem, there’s no telling what the outcome could have been.
“It is just not a safe thing to do, no matter where you are. We really shouldn’t be leaving kids alone locked in cars. We should be taking them with us or finding someone else to take care of them. A car is not a place for childcare,” State Control Center spokesman Graeme Baxter said.
Thankfully, this story had a happy ending, and no one was hurt in the process.
