Mark Pierrot, a fearless Christmas Islander, recently picked up one of the island’s prehistoric monsters and posed for quite the picture!
Just look at that thing!
These ginormous coconut crabs can live up to 70 years and grow to more than 3 feet in length.
Mark says the coconut crabs are actually gentle giants and not much of a concern to their neighbors. However, their claws are so strong that they can climb trees, crack coconuts, and lift up to 62 pounds.
It gets weirder: it’s been theorized that coconut crabs actually carried off Amelia Earhart’s remains after her 1937 crash. So while they won’t outright attack humans, they still do put the “creepy” in “creepy-crawlies!”
