In fact, paper lanterns have their very own festival in China. The Lantern Festival is celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunisolar year, and it marks the end of lunar New Year. This celebration has been going on as early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.). During the festivities, lanterns are obviously the main attraction, not only for their colorful beauty, but also for what’s on them. It’s tradition for people to attach riddles to their lanterns, and let others guess at the answer. Those who solve the riddles often receive a small gift.
