Mom Was In Tears When She Found Out Why Her 11-Year-Old Son Was Sad

Our 11-year-old son comes home from school yesterday a little sad and somber. He loves school and his teachers, so this is an unusual thing on the last day. I asked him if he wanted to talk about it. He said yes. Our conversation went like this:

Isaiah: “Out technology teacher gave each of us 2 Lifesavers white candy mints. One we could eat, and the other was to be given to someone who had been a Lifesaver to us.”

Me: “I love the idea. Who did you give yours to?” (notice I didn’t ask if anyone gave him one)

Isaiah: “Well when the class was over my friend, B, came up to me and gave me his. It made me cry.” (B lost his dad to cancer this year, and Isaiah was really impacted by that. We talked a lot about being a good friend and invited B over to play to take his mind off things.)

Me: “Isaiah, that is so powerful. Do you see how being kind can impact others? I am so proud of you. You were such a blessing to B.”

Isaiah: (reaching into his pocket and crying full on) “This one is for you, Mom. I love you so much, and you will always be my lifesaver. And here is my second one. It’s for you Dad. I love you!”
