Facebook was newly-launched back when I was a college freshman. The fledgling social network was only a year old at the time and was only available to college students exclusively (you needed a “.edu” email address to sign up). Back then, Facebook was a pretty simple site – it was MySpace with a cleaner layout.
Today, Facebook is a household name and, despite a few competitors, is probably the most popular social media network on the planet. Over the course of 12 years of evolution and technological advances, Facebook has gotten a lot more sophisticated than it once was. One feature that’s stayed unchanged, however, is the “Like” button … until now, that is.
For years now, people have complained that hitting “Like” just doesn’t feel right for certain types of posts (breakups, announcements of death, general bad news), but it was the only way to show you saw and cared about/agreed with the post. Now, Facebook unveiled its newest feature, which gave the old “Like” button a much-needed and long-awaited upgrade.
