To get from point A to point B, you needed to have a paper map or pre-printed directions from MapQuest. If traveling solo, without someone to navigate, it was best to memorize as many road names and exit numbers as possible. When lost, there was no choice but to pull over and consult the map, or when all else failed, hope that friendly locals could point you in the right direction.
Today, all you need to do is open the Google Maps app on your smart phone and type in the destination. From there, simply concentrate on the road and listen for well-timed directions and traffic updates. Want to take the scenic route? The app has that covered too.
