Kirk Douglas is a legendary stage and screen actor, known all around the world for starring in many movies throughout Hollywood’s golden age.
On December 9, 2017, Kirk celebrated a milestone that few people (famous or not) get to experience: turning 101.
The New York-born actor is one of the last few living stars from the industry’s classical period, along with Olivia de Havilland (who also turned 101 earlier this year) and a now 95-year-old Doris Day. Kirk was an actor for over half a century, beginning in 1946 with his role in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers alongside Barbara Stanwyck.
A few days after his birthday, Kirk’s son (and fellow actor) Michael shared a few intimate snapshots from the family’s celebration — and the photos are so sweet!
Scroll through to see the pictures that the Douglas family decided to share from Kirk’s big day.
Kirk was married twice and had four sons: Michael, Peter, Joel, and Eric (who passed away in 2004).
All of Kirk’s kids followed in his footsteps with careers in the entertainment industry. Of the four, Michael is easily the most well-known, with many award-winning roles.
On Saturday, the Spartacus actor celebrated his 101st birthday alongside his family.
Michael shared several intimate photos of the casual celebration.
In one photo (above), Kirk posed with his two oldest sons, Michael and Joel, 70, who is a film producer.
Michael also shared a photo of his dad’s birthday cake.
According to People, the sunflower-covered confection honoured Kirk’s acclaimed performance as Vincent van Gogh in the 1956 movie Lust for Life.
Another sweet candid photo showed Kirk blowing out his candles, surrounded by his family members.
Michael, Joel, Kirk’s wife Anne, and Kirk’s granddaughter Kelsey (the daughter of his son Peter) gathered around Kirk in the picture to cheer him on.

Michael’s actress wife, Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones, wasn’t pictured at the party in the photos her husband shared.
However, Catherine did post a sweet tribute to her father-in-law on Instagram.
“101 today!!!! My darling Pappy on my knee,” she captioned a photo of Kirk sitting on her lap. “Happy Birthday to my wonderful, inspirational and loving father in law, Kirk. Love you with all my heart. #hero”
Michael and Catherine’s two kids weren’t pictured at the celebration either, but their son Dylan did take the opportunity to post a message of his own for his “Pappy.”
“Happy birthday 101 years and still sexy love you with all my heart Pappy,” 17-year-old Dylan wrote.
Happy birthday, Kirk!
