America’s ‘Longest-Married Couple’ Celebrates Historic 85th Wedding Anniversary

John and Ann Betar were recognized by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter in 2013 for being the unofficial longest-married couple in America. Four years later, the couple has celebrated their 85th wedding anniversary together.

John and Ann went on their first date when they were 21 and 17 years old, respectively, in 1932.

It was only a few days later that the couple decided to elope and get married on November 25, 1932! “And they said it wouldn’t last!” John laughed all these years later. The 106-year-old is still very much in love with his 102-year-old wife.

The pair had five kids, 15 grandkids, and almost just as many great-grandchildren. Their families came together to celebrate their milestone wedding anniversary in Connecticut.

As a special treat, the couple was surprised with a spin in the same model of car (a Ford Roadster) that they rode on their first date.

They shared a kiss in the car and lots of smiles as they remembered their very first date. “Like old times,” John told Ann.

With so many years together, Ann has a bit of advice for other couples. “Listen to one another no matter what the situation is,” she said. “We’re not arguing, we’re listening and we’ve always listened.”
