She Spent Most Of Her Life In Foster Care And Now She Gets Some Unexpected News

The absence of a safe, loving home can have detrimental effects on a child’s ability to thrive in the world, which can lead to issues at school, antisocial behaviors, and even chronic mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Here at Wimp, we’ve seen how a little bit of love and support can go a long way in the lives of those living under foster care.

Melissa is a poignant example of what life is like for a person growing up without any parental figures in their life. When she was just a child, her mother was sent to jail, leaving her in the custody of foster homes. Fed up with moving from one foster home to the other, Melissa decided to enlist in the Marines so that she could experience the structure and discipline that was missing from much of her childhood. Her duty as a Marine not only gave her an opportunity to serve her country, but also inspired her to serve her family in a very special way — by adopting her brothers.

When the folks at Prank It Fwd heard about her incredible story, they knew they had to help. They paid for her transportation fees, rent, phones, and everything she needed for her trip to the judge that would grant her custody of her brothers. After driving more than 2,000 miles to Alabama, she arrived at the judge’s custody hearing only to receive some unexpected news about her adoption. The events that followed are truly inspiring.
