It’s that time of year: when allergies and changes in temperature add up to sinus issues. That awful pressure and the piercing pain behind your eyes can disable the strongest of humans. And while there are plenty of over-the-counter (OTC) remedies out there, they generally only offer a modicum of relief.
So how are we to function when our sinuses act up? The latest remedies involve acupressure that can be applied with your own fingers, in the privacy of your home, and at no cost whatsoever. With just a little practice, you’ll be able to feel relief in minutes, without ever having to get a prescription.
There are a number of techniques you can try, and we suggest you give them all a chance and see what works the best for you. All of them are simple and easy to do wherever you may be.
First, you may want to try this massage technique:
Place a hand on each side of your neck, hands flat and palms facing in. Then just gently pull straight down along the sides of your neck. The idea is to release blocked lymph node fluid that’s causing the sinus pain.
You can then make a V shape with each hand by putting your first two fingers together and then your last two and separate them out, embrace them around each ear at the V in your hand, and pull the skin gently down to release fluid.
The eyebrows are another key spot for acupressure relief. There are several methods you can use, but one is quite unusual. Let your tongue go up against the roof of your mouth in a flat position while you press between your brows simultaneously. Hold for 20 seconds, then take a break. The theory is that you should feel that blocked mucus in your sinus cavity drain down your throat. Give it a try and see if it helps.
For an especially stuffy nose, sometimes simply massaging your brow area or even pressing on the most painful areas for a few seconds and repeating can offer some relief.
